A collection of projects, formal and informal.
CS 329E: Elements of Data Visualization
Final Project
Based on the challenge prompt to find reasons why a species may be in decline in a nature preserve, my partner and I used python packages to efficiently sort and visualize patterns in the data provided. Through analyzing the data, we concluded several possible types of human activity that may be detrimental to local wildlife prompting further investigation to be done.
LIN 350: Analyzing Text Data
Final Project
Using a raw tweet dataset from Noah’s Ark, my partner and I preprocessed the text data to conduct a simple sentiment analysis on tweets about NFL teams in a given season. We focused on finding a trend in tweet polarity that could be accounted for by the teams’ performances in recent games.
LIN 373N: Machine Learning Text Analysis
Final Project
In this project, I used a bag-of-words approach to identify tweet specificity to see if it could improve on just using term frequency-inverse document frequencies (TF-IDF). Testing on a dataset of rated tweets, I found that implementing bag-of-words did outperform TF-IDF.
LIN 350: Computational Semantics
Final Project
An exploration of gendered language in the news. We used the Gensim library to create predictions from our preprocessed data separated into female-written and male-written headlines for each category of news.
PSY 341K: Intro to Machine Learning
Final Project
Visualization of women’s representation in film via decision trees. After calculating entropy of different factors in film, we separated the data using within the US and outside of the US (‘foreign film’ category), then created two trees that split off using further categories like number of awards won and runtime (tree visualizations in appendix).
UGS 303 Environmental Music Symposium Performances
Every semester, selected groups perform in the Environmental Music Symposium based on the merit of their projects. I contributed to two song parodies, one as a pianist and one as a singer, and both were chosen!
Rain Man (playing keyboard) – parody of Piano Man by Elton John
Renewables (singing) – parody of Rocketman by Elton John
AMS F311S: Gendering Asian America
Research Report
During the summer after my freshman year, I took an interesting class titled Gendering Asian America. After expanding my knowledge of the history of Asian immigrants (past just general Chinese American facts I collected growing up) and their experiences in the United States, I completed a research project on Asian Americans in the music industry.
AFR F320C: Power and Place Making Texas History
Final Project – Essay and Op-Ed
Attending school in Texas, it is important to learn about the history of the lands I have the privilege of studying on. Acknowledging the Indigenous people who cultivated the land that is now Texas as well as the history of the University of Texas at Austin is just the beginning.
